Nelson and Tasman musicians are coming together to support and celebrate themselves at the launch of the Nelson/Tasman Musicians Club on Sunday May 27th at The Playhouse Cafe just outside …

Nelson and Tasman musicians are coming together to support and celebrate themselves at the launch of the Nelson/Tasman Musicians Club on Sunday May 27th at The Playhouse Cafe just outside of Mapua.
The aim of the club is to create a forum where musicians of all levels, ages and talents can come together to exchange ideas, collaborate and create contacts within the regional music scene.
The club organiser, Chrissie Small says that “it’s often about who you know, not what you know in the music business. It is a great chance for musicians to get together. Young talent can gain knowledge from old hands, people can find others to jam with and it’s a chance to try out new material and get feedback from your peers.”
She hopes that new bands can be formed off the back of the Club and will strengthen the local music scene, helping people score more gigs, gain valuable contacts and get to know fellow musos.

The format of the club is an open mic session with a few specific acts invited along each meeting. Artists young and old will be invited to show off their skills on stage over the afternoon, and spontaneous collaboration will be encouraged among members. Musical games and competitions will also be thrown into the mix with the aim of crossing genres and getting musicians together that wouldn’t normally play together.
Industry help will also be a real focus of the club. Guest speakers and industry experts will be a feature at club meetings. Speaker may be in person or via Skype set up over internet allowing experts from around the country to share their knowledge with Nelson musicians that would otherwise have to travel to the bigger cities for industry meetings.
Local businesses are also coming on board offering discounts to members. The Playhouse cafe and Music Planet are both offering discounts to musicians who are part of the club and other businesses are coming on board. These sponsor companies will also be giving away prizes during some of the organised jam events with winners voted on by members.
The first Nelson/Tasman Musician club meeting runs from at 2pm till 6pm on Sunday May 27th for all parties to register interest in being a part of this new Club. There is no age limit or level of musicianship required to join and everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the music on the day. Official membership sub to the club is only $10 for the rest of this year… 2012.
Club meetings will be held on the last Sunday of every month at The Playhouse Cafe, chosen for its facilities and location of equal distance between Motueka and Nelson.
For more information please call Chrissie Small on 540-2312.

The vision more than 70 years ago, when our community library started from humble beginnings on a front doorstep, that books really can and do change lives remains in place today. Now in a modern building but still run totally by volunteers MAPUA COMMUNITY LIBRARY is a focal point of village life.

We have the books on our shelves but in March, we will also be joined by some of New Zealand’s much-loved authors as we ‘SOAR AGAIN’’ at our second three-day Literary Festival.

‘SOAR’, the first festival in March 2010, was an ambitious project to be undertaken by a small group of volunteers but proved to be very successful in raising much-needed funds for the library and for engaging the wider community. So successful in fact that library was honoured to be chosen as the overall Tasman winner in the annual ‘TRUSTPOWER’ COMMUNITY AWARDS.

Inspired and encouraged by the original venture we are now ready to offer an exciting new programme with something to suit all tastes and age groups. From competitions to cocktails, workshops to a wonky donkey, and the fabulous finale in the Café Ooh! La! La! ‘SOAR AGAIN’ promises to be a feast of fun. Check the library website www.mapuacommunitylibrary.co.nz for full details.

PROGRESS REPORT 2011 When The Hall opened in 1945, 800 people turned up to celebrate this important new facility for the Mapua community and the music and dancing continued long into …

PROGRESS REPORT 2011

When The Hall opened in 1945, 800 people turned up to celebrate this important new facility for the Mapua community and the music and dancing continued long into the night!

The hall has served the community in many ways and is still used by as many as 30 local associations, clubs and other regular users from our rapidly growing village. The hall is also used for a number of large annual events. The Hall Committee is very aware of their role in facilitating various community activities and is working actively on upgrading plans and fund raising. We greatly appreciate the practical and financial support that many of you have provided, and greatly value the active collaboration with users in order to make the renovated hall the best possible facility.

In March 2011 we held a community meeting to launch the draft plans for the new hall layout. Based on feedback from consultations before this meeting, we had decided to keep the main hall building, as it has important historical value for many residents in Mapua. The upgrading plan includes an enlargement of the current main hall while keeping the street face (and the beautiful timber floor) of the hall very close to what it was when it opened in 1945.

The plan adds a new commercial standard kitchen, new toilet facilities, changing rooms for sports in the domain and for theatre productions, as well as other additions that will all be built along the outside walls on three sides of the current hall. Valuable input from community members and a hall design sub-committee have created the plan that both meet most requirements within a reasonable budget. Currently we are finalizing the paperwork for Resource and Building consents. Application has been made to the Canterbury Community Trust for a contribution to the $200,000 that the community needs to raise in order to get the Tasman District Council support that has been allocated for the next budget year. Local fund raising has started with more than $40,000 already in the Hall Upgrade Fund and the Hall Committee is grateful for all contributions from individuals, clubs and community associations. The Coastal Garden Group created a great event in September which provided major funds for the upgrade.

In early 2012 we have plans for several events in collaboration with community groups that will be listed on the website. We are also working on promotional materials that can help in the fund raising efforts. On behalf of the various users of the hall, we express our appreciation to all those who are helping us achieve the upgrade of this important community facility. If you are not a member of the Hall Society and would like to become more involved in our work, you are welcome to join. Just send an email to: m.garner@xtra.co.nz.

Andy and Karen Price began offering lessons to children in the Moutere in in 2006. Their company, ActiveKidz, has now taught close to one thousand children in the area since its inception. Andy and Karen both have PE teaching backgrounds and are passionate about teaching children to swim.

This year they also have the services of Faye Hudson, who has swum at New Zealand National level and went to Olympic trials in 2008 . She is an outstanding swimming teacher and it is great to have her working with our local kids.

Having taught swimming in all of the Moutere school pools, Andy and Karen decided to build their own pool at their Chalets, on Seaton Valley Road, in November 2010. Their heated 12.5 metres by 6 metres pool lends itself perfectly to lesson teaching and was built with this purpose in mind.

If you would like lessons for your children over the summer holidays, or in term 1, you can book online at www.mapuachalets.co.nz/swim or email swimschool@mapuachalets.co.nz or phone Andy and Karen on 03 540 3316.
